Maki Adams & mykel online Debut 'memorex' With New Single "batwings"
Maki Adams and mykel online have decided to combine their creative minds and form the duo memorex. They just released their first single, “batwings,” a paranoid love song featuring Lucas Lex, an artist with a cult-like fan base who’s flown under the radar of major editorials for quite some time.
The song begins with a reversed melody that creates a confusing feeling before it’s cut short by Maki Adams’ first verse over the main midwest emo-styled guitar loop that carries throughout the entirety of the song. Maki Adams has the ability to create intimacy between the listener and himself through his calm and honest vocal deliveries that not many can achieve. Not long after, we hear the mildly distorted voice of Lucas Lex over the big stadium drums, guitar loop, and new melodic layers that memorex has chosen in this production. Lex states they “wrote about being so blinded by the prospects of things in relationships that I avoid the red flags." Shortly after Lucas Lex’s introspective hook, we peel back another important layer to this song which is mykel online’s verse. mykel online opens a door for us to see his mental state through his heavily reflective verse, where his part ends with him repeating the phrase “words that you said, stay in my head." Once again, he lets us into his current state of mind. The duo ends the track by removing layers of the song one by one, leaving us with just the drums and a distorted synth pluck.
Like any song from mykel and Maki, there are a lot of layers to be discovered as one relistens to this song. Being the first single from memorex, "batwings" is a great introduction to new listeners who have not heard the music of mykel online and Maki Adams. The duo successfully combines both of their own unique approaches into the music.
